As an online business owner, we all want to create passive income, am I right? Way back in 2018, I created a profitable ebook called Manual Pinning Secrets. I sold hundreds of copies over a 2-year period and it was amazing!
Then, Pinterest changed and my strategy was no longer working. I stopped selling my profitable ebook and vowed to update it. But when I realized I would have to rewrite most of it AND give it a different name, I decided to just come back to it in a few months. That was almost 3 years ago!!!
Anyways, the moral of this story is that the successful ebook wasn’t the first one I tried to sell. In fact, my first ebook sold only 5 copies. It was a failure for revenue but I ended up turning it into a free course for list building. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about creating successful digital products like ebooks.
This is my story (plus all the mistakes I made along the way). Now, I want to show YOU how to market and sell your first profitable ebook.
The first ebook I wrote was called Grow Your List with Pinterest and I just knew people were going to be lining up to get their copy.
But, as I disclosed above, it never happened. In fact, I only sold 5 copies in the 8 months it was for sale (and it was only $9). Not the outcome I had envisioned. I did a lot of work writing that book and I thought I did everything right. I really did.
It was a good ebook filled with solid strategies and I knew it could help people build their email lists but for some reason, it just wasn’t selling.
And I felt totally defeated and wondered, “what the hell did I do wrong?”
Looking back now, I see all the things I actually DID do wrong. It wasn’t that my ebook sucked, it was my fault for not getting my messaging right.
My mentor says that if a digital product fails it’s probably because your messaging did. You didn’t do enough to make it a hell yes. Cause if it ain’t a hell yes then it’s a hell NO, right?
Here are the 3 BIG mistakes I made when it came to marketing my first ebook.
Mistake #1 – I wasn’t clear on who my ideal customer was
- I shouldn’t have assumed that just anyone would buy my eBook. And you can’t either.
- You need to know your customer inside and out. You should know their fears and struggles, and their dreams.
- You should know if they are a she or a he, you should know if they have a 9-5, are an entrepreneur, an empty-nester, or a stay-at-home mom.
- The clearer we can get on this, the more impact we can have and ultimately more sales.
Mistake #2 – I didn’t ask the right questions
There was nothing that made my eBook different or special. I mean, why would someone want/need this book? What was the problem I was trying to solve? How could I make solving this problem easier for them? These are all questions that I never asked.
Mistake #3 – I didn’t ask for testimonials
Now I know this one can be hard. Especially since I’m an introvert but you need social proof if you want anyone to buy your eBook.
There is an automated way to do this but I like to give away a handful of copies to my audience and ask right then and there.
This would look like “Hey, I would love to give you a copy of my brand new eBook in exchange for your feedback.
It’s a marketing principle called reciprocity. It plays on the fact that people don’t like being indebted to someone. So they are more likely to give you a glowing testimonial in order to make up for the fact that it was free or discounted.

I decided to stop selling my failed eBook in 2017, but all was not lost. I turned it into a free 5-day challenge that I run every now and then.

I make a pretty consistent income (about $400/mo) from sales of my eBook every. single. month. Being a busy single mom, I knew that client work would only take me so far. When your income is related to your time you can’t leverage it.
You can’t make money while you’re sleeping, at your son’s soccer game, or spending time with your family.

This is WITHOUT running Facebook ads or promoted pins. This is all from the targeted people I get to my blog and landing pages FOR FREE from Pinterest.
And this is all automated. I did the work upfront and now Pinterest does all the work for me. Driving tons of daily traffic and subscribers to my list where I’m able to tell them about my book.
