How To Make Money From Home

Do you want to bring in more income this year? What if you could make money from home by starting an online business? Would that be a game-changer for you?

Let me take a wild guess… you want to start a blog or online business with the intention of making a sustainable income.

Maybe you want to stay home with your kids or be able to help out with the family expenses.

Maybe you want to be able to travel around the world or be able to quit your 9-5.

Whatever is driving you, figuring out your WHY is the first thing you need to do before you start thinking about HOW you’ll be able to make money from home.  

In this post, we will be taking an in-depth look at exactly what it would take to make $100k this year in your online business.

In fact, I’ve been thinking A LOT about what I want this year to look like and how I’m going to make it happen. I want to make MORE money from home this year and I want to be able to work less during the summer due to my kids being home with me.

So, I’ve been thinking about how I can diversify my income streams and what that would look like for me.

I’ve been hearing this for years… You should have multiple streams of income coming in so you’re not relying on any single one too heavily.

Here are 4 ways you could make money from home this year with an online business

1. Affiliate marketing – 10% (of your total income)

2. Passive income streams – 20%

3. Freelancing/contract work – 30%

4. Coaching/consulting clients – 40%

In order to plan this out, I’ve been going back and forth on where I want to focus my limited time and energy. Plus I need to hit certain income goals in my business this year.

In order to come up with a solid plan, we need to reverse-engineer our year. We start with our goals and then work backward on HOW we will be able to achieve them.

So our goal is to make 100k from home this year.

If we break that down into the amount of income we need to make every month, we get around $8,333. Whoa! Does that number make you feel a little uncomfortable, maybe way out of reach?

Don’t worry, if we crunch some more numbers we’ll get a clearer picture of how we can actually reach that goal.

Looking at the income streams above we can break them down into 4 different categories.

1. Affiliate marketing – about $800 per month

2. Passive Income – about $1600 per month

3. Freelancing/contract work – about $2500 per month

4. Coaching/consulting clients – about $3300 per month

Then we need to take a deep dive into our pricing strategy

• Say you charge your coaching clients $850 per month. You’ll need to get about 4 clients per month or raise your prices to work with fewer clients and still reach your goal.

• Say you have an automated funnel to sell your $200 course You’ll need to enroll 8 students every single month. If you are looking at it from a conversion standpoint you’ll know that around 1-3% of your subscribers convert into a sale. That means you’ll need about 800 subscribers going into your funnel every single month to make sure you hit your income goal.

• If you plan on doing freelancing or contract work and you create 3 different priced packages it might look like this. Level 1 is priced at $400, Level 2 is priced at $900, and Level 3 is priced at $1500 you can easily figure out that you need 1 client for every package you offer so 3 clients per month.

Now we need to sit back and figure out if we actually have the time

Do you have enough time for 4 coaching clients along with 3 contract clients every single month? Can you easily get 800 subscribers every single month? Will you have to pay for FB ads or promoted pins to get more people into your funnel?

Maybe at this point, it doesn’t seem doable. Maybe it can work if you raise your prices a bit. Either you can try to find a way to make it work or you might realize that you may need to lower your income goal a bit.

And let’s not forget about all the marketing/promotion you’ll need to do

You’ll also need a plan for how you’re going to show up online and get more visible.

Maybe you plan on doing more webinars this year, starting your own YouTube channel, finally getting on Facebook Live, start blogging more, start hosting JV webinars, doing some paid live training, etc.

Whatever it is, you’ll need to set aside time on your calendar to do all this promoting so you can actually land those clients.

Do you see how this is all coming together? When we start to break it all down into smaller chunks and see exactly what we need to do to achieve these numbers, 100 thousand dollars doesn’t seem that far out of reach.

I’m still planning things out for this year, but I can tell you that I have some exciting plans (this post may have given you some clues), but my lips are sealed right now.

First of all, it’s important to understand that Pinterest is not just a social media platform – it’s a visual search engine. People come to Pinterest to search for ideas, inspiration, and solutions to their problems. This makes it the perfect platform to promote your online course. By creating visually appealing pins that showcase your course content and its benefits, you can attract the attention of an audience who is looking for the exact information that you’re offering.

All you need to get started with Pinterest advertising is a business account. Once you’ve set up your business account, you can start creating pins about your course topic. Be sure to include eye-catching images and compelling text that highlights the benefits of your course. You can also use the description field to add keywords that will help people find your pins when they search for relevant topics.

Next, it’s time to set up your first Pinterest advertising campaign. You can choose from a few different ad formats, such as static pins, carousel pins, video pins, and idea pins. You don’t want to waste money. Advertising is an investment in your business, it’s best to start low and go slow. You should test your ad with a smaller audience before scaling up, this way you can check the performance and optimize your targeting, images, and text before spending a lot of money.

Your budget can be as low as $10 a day. Spending less per day means you’ll need to wait longer to get the data you need to improve your ads performance so keep this in mind. You can choose to bid on a cost-per-click (CPC) or cost-per-conversion or use auto-bidding (which is what I normally use). Once your campaign has been running for 10-14 days you can optimize your campaign by adjusting your targeting, budget, and ad format to see better performance.

Tracking Your Results

Finally, it’s important to track your progress and measure the success of your Pinterest advertising campaigns. I check my client’s campaigns every morning and optimize as needed but no more than once per week. Once you have your Pinterest tags installed, you can use your ads dashboard to track engagement, clicks, leads, and conversions. By analyzing this data on a weekly basis, you’ll be able to see which pins and campaigns are performing the best and make adjustments accordingly.

Four Signs Your Business Is Ready for Advertising on Pinterest

There are a lot of things to consider when deciding to jump into advertising on Pinterest. It can be scary and a lot of entrepreneurs have a hard time figuring out if they’re ready.

Let me just start by saying that Pinterest is a great place to advertise just about anything. If your product is geared towards women then it’s an amazing resource to get your products seen. Pinterest has seen its advertising revenue grow this year while others like Facebook and Google have shown losses.

Advertising on Pinterest should always be viewed as an investment in your business. But, that investment could result in a loss if you don’t already have a proven marketing strategy in place. Chances are, if your product is selling well organically, then it will do well when putting money behind it.

If you have a pin that performs well on Pinterest organically, then setting it up as a paid ad will usually get you great results. This is because it already has a ton of organic data behind it. Pinterest already knows who converts and will remember all that data when promoting your pin.

So how do you know if you should invest in Pinterest advertising? I have 4 important questions you should be asking when deciding if Pinterest advertising is right for your business.

1. Do you have a clear overall marketing strategy in place?

Before you start investing your hard-earned dollars into paid advertising, it’s important to have a solid marketing plan already in place. You need to make sure you have sales pages that convert well or a freebie with a proven track record of getting leads organically.

You’ll also want to have an email marketing funnel in place so you can nurture your leads and get that sale. You need to have a clear idea of who you’re targeting and what you want to achieve through your advertising efforts so you can measure and achieve your goals.

2. Do you have a strong product or service offering?

Before you start investing in paid advertising, it’s important to make sure that you have a product or service that is in demand and that meets the needs of your target market. Having a strong and compelling offer will lead to more return on your investment. This will help ensure that your ads are successful and that you are able to generate a good return on your ad spend.

3. Do you have the resources to invest in paid advertising?

Paid advertising can be expensive, so it’s important to make sure that you have the financial resources to invest in it. This includes not only the money to pay for the ads themselves but also the time and resources to manage and optimize your campaigns or hire someone to do it for you.

With Pinterest, you don’t need a huge advertising budget. I’ve managed campaigns that had success and only spent $20 a day. Once your campaigns are performing well you can start investing a little bit more over time.

As an online business owner, we all want to create passive income, am I right? Way back in 2018, I created a profitable ebook called Manual Pinning Secrets. I sold hundreds of copies over a 2-year period and it was amazing!

Then, Pinterest changed and my strategy was no longer working. I stopped selling my profitable ebook and vowed to update it. But when I realized I would have to rewrite most of it AND give it a different name, I decided to just come back to it in a few months. That was almost 3 years ago!!!

Anyways, the moral of this story is that the successful ebook wasn’t the first one I tried to sell. In fact, my first ebook sold only 5 copies. It was a failure for revenue but I ended up turning it into a free course for list building. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about creating successful digital products like ebooks.

This is my story (plus all the mistakes I made along the way). Now, I want to show YOU how to market and sell your first profitable ebook.

The first ebook I wrote was called Grow Your List with Pinterest and I just knew people were going to be lining up to get their copy.

But, as I disclosed above, it never happened. In fact, I only sold 5 copies in the 8 months it was for sale (and it was only $9). Not the outcome I had envisioned. I did a lot of work writing that book and I thought I did everything right. I really did.

It was a good ebook filled with solid strategies and I knew it could help people build their email lists but for some reason, it just wasn’t selling.

And I felt totally defeated and wondered, “what the hell did I do wrong?”

Looking back now, I see all the things I actually DID do wrong. It wasn’t that my ebook sucked, it was my fault for not getting my messaging right.

My mentor says that if a digital product fails it’s probably because your messaging did. You didn’t do enough to make it a hell yes. Cause if it ain’t a hell yes then it’s a hell NO, right?

Here are the 3 BIG mistakes I made when it came to marketing my first ebook.

Mistake #1 – I wasn’t clear on who my ideal customer was

• I shouldn’t have assumed that just anyone would buy my eBook. And you can’t either.
• You need to know your customer inside and out. You should know their fears and struggles, and their dreams.
• You should know if they are a she or a he, you should know if they have a 9-5, are an entrepreneur, an empty-nester, or a stay-at-home mom.
• The clearer we can get on this, the more impact we can have and ultimately more sales.

Mistake #2 – I didn’t ask the right questions

There was nothing that made my eBook different or special. I mean, why would someone want/need this book? What was the problem I was trying to solve? How could I make solving this problem easier for them? These are all questions that I never asked.

Mistake #3 – I didn’t ask for testimonials

Now I know this one can be hard. Especially since I’m an introvert but you need social proof if you want anyone to buy your eBook.

There is an automated way to do this but I like to give away a handful of copies to my audience and ask right then and there.

This would look like “Hey, I would love to give you a copy of my brand new eBook in exchange for your feedback.

It’s a marketing principle called reciprocity. It plays on the fact that people don’t like being indebted to someone. So they are more likely to give you a glowing testimonial in order to make up for the fact that it was free or discounted.

I decided to stop selling my failed eBook in 2017, but all was not lost. I turned it into a free 5-day challenge that I run every now and then.

I was hesitant to create another eBook, but honestly, this wasn’t really planned. I decided 30 days before and took inspired action.

I created and launched my 2nd eBook, Manual Pinning Simplified in February 2018. And I made almost $300 that first day it was for sale! And in the next 2 weeks, I made almost $750!

 

I was a little blown away, but after the fact, I realized I had done SO MANY things differently this time. Things that actually worked!

I had created something that my people actually wanted. They were so hungry for the information that selling it was, dare I say… easy.

And now, this little eBook of mine continues to make me money every single month on autopilot. Take a look at how much we made in June of 2019…

This is how you create passive income

This just means you created something once and then you can sell it over and over again. You put the work in one time and then you reap the benefits for years to come.

I make a pretty consistent income (about $400/mo) from sales of my eBook every. single. month. Being a busy single mom, I knew that client work would only take me so far. When your income is related to your time you can’t leverage it.

You can’t make money while you’re sleeping, at your son’s soccer game, or spending time with your family.

Believe me, I wish this were true. But unfortunately, that’s just not the way it goes.

This is WITHOUT running Facebook ads or promoted pins. This is all from the targeted people I get to my blog and landing pages FOR FREE from Pinterest.

And this is all automated. I did the work upfront and now Pinterest does all the work for me. Driving tons of daily traffic and subscribers to my list where I’m able to tell them about my book.
