  • Why Pinterest Group Boards Are A Waste Of Time

Why Pinterest group boards are a waste of time and what you should do instead.

Have you been wondering if joining Pinterest group boards is worth your time? This is a question I get asked a lot. Especially when people are just starting out on the platform. You hear that joining group boards is the BEST way to get your pins in front of more people.

That used to be the advice given. And, at one point in time, it actually worked really well. But, things have changed on the platform in the last year or so. There's a better way to get your content seen and shared. In this post, I'm going to show you why spending a lot of time trying to find and join Pinterest group boards is a waste of your time and what you should do instead.

What Are Pinterest Group Boards?

For those of you that don't know what a group boards is... it's a board on Pinterest that has a 2 or more people sharing (or contributing) pins to. A few years ago, Pinterest group boards were THE BEST way to get your pins seen by LOTS of people. The advice from Pinterest marketing experts was to "join a ton of group boards" and skyrocket your traffic from Pinterest. And for many years, it worked! But not so much anymore...

Are Group Boards Dead?

Yes, and no. There are still group boards out there that give people great results. But it can be like finding a needle in a haystack. It's a lot of trial and error, plus having a bad performing group board on your account could bring down your overall reach on the platform.

Why Don't Group Boards Work Anymore?

In the spring of 2018, Pinterest reps said in a few interviews that group boards were no longer going to get major exposure in the feeds. Pinterest also said that pins from your own boards would get priority distribution. This sent people into a panic. They were leaving their group boards left and right and a lot of those once thriving boards became ghost towns.

As you can imagine, not having much activity on a board can decrease its reach and exposure in the feed of followers. This means engagement goes down which isn't a good thing for the contributors of that board.

So How Do You Get Your Pins Seen?

There is a much better use of your time than spending hours searching for group boards and emailing group board owners for an invite.

I've been using Tailwind tribes to get my pins seen and shared by lots of people on Pinterest.

Tailwind Tribes is a tool that enables you to share your pins with a large group of pinners, just like you! Tribes will also help you with two key problems we face everyday:

  1. Having a steady supply of high-quality pins to share
  2. Getting your pins seen and shared by the right people

With this tool, you will be able to add your own content to a Tribe and have others share your pins to their own audience. This is so helpful because not only are you sharing your own content, but you are reaching a much larger audience.

Here is how it works:

You go to Tailwindapp.com (my affiliate link) and go into the tribes feature. You will be able to search for tribes to join by keywords or topic. Once you get accepted to a tribe, you will be able to share your pins with the other tribe members and you will also find other peoples pins to save to your Pinterest boards.

Although collaborating, networking and sharing content is not a new strategy, Tribes makes it easier for anyone to build a relationships and develop a successful Pinterest marketing strategy.

What To Look For In A Tribe

There will be some trial and error when it comes to finding good performing tribes. But, here are some tips to help you figure out which tribe would be best for you to join.

1. Look for 25 or more contributors. Don't think that a tribe with hundreds will give you better results. The more contributors a tribe has the faster the board moves and the chance of your pins getting buried will be higher.

2. Take a look at the tribes results by selecting preview tribe. (like the photo below)

3. A re-share is when a tribe member shares your pin to their own board. You want to look for tribes with a healthy number of repins compared to re-shares.

You should look for Tribes with a 50% ratio or higher. So, if there are 100k re-shares and 50k repins then this would be 50% of the pins that get shared eventually get repinned by other people on Pinterest. If you see that the repins are higher than the re-shares then this is a great tribe to join.

If you're spending a lot of time searching for group boards to join, your time might be better spent on joining and contributing to Tribes. And right now, you can join Tailwind Tribes for FREE and try it out. Give it 30 days and just see what happens... What have you got to lose?

    1. So I recently spent almost $50 on your eBook about pinning to group boards on your phone and now you say that’s not good advice? Why are you still selling the book on your site? What a fraud.

      1. Thank you for purchasing the Manual Pinning Simplified eBook, Debbie! I’m not saying that you shouldn’t still pin to your group boards. I’m saying that looking for NEW group boards to join is a waste of your time. You should always be evaluating your group boards to see if they are still serving you.

    2. Thanks for this post. I’m just starting out on Pinterest and recently joined a few boards. Would it be better to delete them before getting started or keep them and join Tailwind tribes? I wasn’t planning on spending time looking for more group boards at this point.
